I'm a bit confused.
I've sat at nearly all of the budget hearings that have been held so far and have watched the show that is being put on by a couple of the Councilpeople.
All of the sudden they are concerned about Public Safety. Outraged at the fact that the City is laying off Police and Fire.
Well, where the hell have they been for the last 2 years. Where was the outrage last year when there were $14,000,000.00 in so-called Emergency Purchases? Where was the outrage when the Mayor had nearly 30 appointees? Where was the outrage when they were voting to buy garbage trucks from a higher bidder outside of the City?
The list of outrageous items is long. And yet, we heard not a peep.
I just don't get it.
I hope that people realize that the Council Folks that are screaming the loudest this year (even accusing the Mayor of murder for closing a fire station) are the same Council Folks that sat by and allowed this mess to happen. |

Wish I could vote in every ward! And that every council person would be mandated to read the city charter and take a class in finance and budgeting before being sworn in! |

You're a bit ahead of the game. I've heard one or two don't even read the agenda before hand. |

I wonder how the item in the finance committee's agenda for tonight's meeting will go. 107 thousand for a new city hall air conditioning chiller. |

Those chillers are being paid for out of the Public Improvement Fund...(Public Improvement Fund: 402.753.200976.000) which has to be used for infrastructure type expenditures only... we have a milage for these issues.
So we couldn't use that money to pay for police and fire. |

It shouldn't be all that hard to move the money from one account to another. |

the millage was passed for public improvement projects, so that is what it must be used for... (in theory) |

If it's possible to move money designated for neighborhood policing to the general fund, it's possible to move money designated for public improvements to the general fund. BTW, how does air conditioning come under "public improvement"? Seems like a public improvement should benefit the entire city, not just city hall. |

The Police Department is part of the General Fund... whereas the Public Improvement Fund is not. So you are not moving money for Community Policing to the General Fund, it is already there. |

Community policing millage money is supposed to be used for community policing. If it can be diverted, so can other funds. |

The council's been doing it for years.
BTW, a fire last night near Civic park School resulted in every ion duty firefighter being called to the scene. What if there had been another fire called in? |
