A few years ago, we went to Ann Arbor to check out a couple used book stores. It happened to be Hash bash Saturday - we honestly didn't know. Anyway, after checking out the stores - great selection of used books - we wandered around "observing the inhabitants in their natural environment" Walking back to the parking ramp, we followed 4 ladies with flowery dresses, flowers in their hair, the whole hippy thing. At the ramp, they got into a large Mercedes - blew their image completely. |

If the politicians had let the military conduct the war, we would have won. The media's insistence that we were losing panicked the politicians. Tet was a military victory that decimated the VC and the NVA, but the media saw it as a loss for us.
What did the politicians do wrong? Do you think we should have sent in thte nukes? I heard we never lost a battle in Vietnam but we did suffer significant casualties. In 20/20 hindsight I think we should have stayed out of Vietnam. |

Eisenhower sent the first "advisers" there in the 50's. Yes, we could have won, without nukes. There was no clear objective, no plan to clear an area and keep it cleared of VC. Ever see the movie Hamburger Hill? It was based on fact. We took the hill at great cost, then abandoned it. Some general wanted to prove we could take it. We Were Soldiers is another movie based on fact. At the height of the battle, the commander on the scene was told to fly back to Saigon to confer with his superiors about the battle. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BATTLE!
LBJ micromanaged company size engagements from the White House. Permission for air strikes to support ground troops had to go through LBJ.
Contrast that to the first Gulf War. Bush Sr. let Colin Powell & the generals on the scene plan the campaign & execute the plans without interference, at least until he told them to stop short of Baghdad. We kicked their butts, and maybe could have prevented the second war if they were allowed to contiunue.
Was Vietnam a mistake? Possibly. But, I feel that once we went in there we had a moral obligation to stay and finish the job. Pulling out the way we did cost many thousands of Vietnamese their lives. |

I only pass through Flint now since my mother lives up north. But every time I pass through, I always go to Capitol coney island on Bristol & Van Slyke. It's right off the interstate so it's easy off, and easy on and I still get the great taste of Flint style coney islands. But back inthe day, Angelos was the place to get coneys. They only closed from 4 am to 6am for grill cleaning. The 22 hours each day that they were open, they were busy ( mostly shop workers) and the service was extremely fast. I was always told that the owner of Angelo's was related to the owner of Flint original.
Another Flint landmark that is still open is Donnas Donuts on Bristol across from Baker college ( right down the street from Capitol coney island). It's been there since 1962 and have the best donuts that I have ever had. I always have to stop and pick up a dozen nuttys on my way back to Tennessee. My wife, a native Tennessean loves them. |
