The Flint City Clerks Office has officially certified 6 Flint residents as candidates for the May 6, 2008 election for 4 open seats on the Flint Board of Education.

The City Clerk’s Office has officially certified the following Individuals as candidates for 1st Ward City Council person for the City of Flint in the upcoming May 6th, 2008 election:
Tyrone Croom
Delrico Loyd
Eric Mays
William Newson
Omar A. Sims
The names of all five candidates will appear on the May 6th primary election ballot and the names of the top two vote-getters in that election will appear on the ballot for the August 5th, 2008 election.

FLINT, Michigan -- Big decisions are ahead for Flint Board of Education members, and all of this year's candidates say they are committed to making sure those are made with students and the community in mind.
Incumbent Vera J. Perry is one of three candidates seeking four seats on the Flint school board. As the realities of declining state revenues and falling student enrollment sink in and with talk of additional school closings, the four candidates for three open seats know there are tough tasks to be tackled.
But not all agree on how to get the job done.
David Davenport, a former mayoral candidate and motivational speaker, said more should have been done to avoid closing schools and laying off district staff.
"The economy is bad enough. We don't need to lay off 200-something people," Davenport said.
He's the only challenger in a field with three incumbents.
Incumbents Jennifer Dillard, board President Vera Perry and Antoinette Lockett also are on the May 6 ballot.
Dillard was elected to a yearlong term on the board last year.
Lockett was appointed in October to fill the remainder of a two-year spot left vacant when board member Michael Cross died, but has decided to run for a four-year seat.
Former board member Tracey Fountain is running unopposed to serve the remainder of Cross' term.
Dillard said she hopes to continue building a strong teamwork structure on the board.
"I think we're headed in the right spot, and first and foremost we have to develop a balanced budget," Dillard said. "We want to make sure to maintain programs for kids."
On April 16, the board approved its 2008-09 budget, which calls for deep staff cuts and closing four schools to prevent a $12-million budget deficit.
Board members said the cuts and closures were necessary to maintain programs as enrollment dips and operating costs rise.
Davenport said he would look into all options, including asking residents to pay a tax to support the schools, before closing more buildings or laying off staff.
"I'm not going to sit back and let it go," he said. "I'm going to try to get the board members to understand there are other ways to find funds."
But Perry said the board still needs to work on getting the district to the "right size" as student numbers continue to shrink.
"We're working with the facilities committee to see what needs to be closed and what needs to be saved," Perry said. "We have too many buildings open for the amount of children we have."
She said she'd also like to work with parents and stress the importance of their child's education and continue strengthening the district's curriculum.
During a recent candidate forum, Lockett said she also planned to stress the importance of education to parents, so they could pass it on to their children.
Jennifer DillardDavenport said he would seek grants to support school programs and look into creating incentive programs for teachers and students to improve grade point averages districtwide.
He said he also would like to work on improving school security and building maintenance.
"It's a way we can bring the youth back into the city of Flint," Davenport said.
Dillard said she plans to focus on making Flint schools an attractive educational option for area parents and students.
"Flint schools are good schools," she said. "Sometimes the best choice is right near you and you don't realize it."
The Journal could not reach Lockett for comment.
