Demolition began on the former Legal Services building today, commencing with the back facade and moving forward. The buildings on either side of this building will also come down. I love the drawing of the renovated Blackstone's building which was originally the State Theatre until it was chopped down to two stories and converted to retail space. I understand the sloping floor still exists under the first floor and the proposed facade from the rendering is inspired by the original facade of the old Strand Theatre. So I'm wondering if the Blackstone's building will become an entertainment venue.

I know that about ten years ago, there were plans to make Blackstones into a theatre once again for Flint Community Players, where I was set designer at the time. I forget why it fell through, although it may have been a lack of space thing...

We also looked at taking over the Capitol Theatre at one point, but Troy wanted a million bucks. That was ok, except for the fact that it would have cost us THREE million to fix it up.

I now return you to your thread aboutt the State Theatre!

The Capitol Theatre needs to be renovated and put into a non profit's hands! It's critical for this city to have that theatre restored!

Great idea RYAN!!!!! Do you have any non-profits in mind? Do you know whether the Honorable Mayor Don Williamson would be interested in donating some $$'s to such a non-profit. It would be such a generous and noble gester for this highly esteemed official. Just trying to help think of something positive his Honor could do for the City - besides hitting the road and getting out of town, that is.

I think that is a great idea "Justaskme", there currently is a group trying to make that happen. I am not sure of the name of this group, but they are working on getting funding now.

Although I can't write a check for The Honorable Donald J. Williamson and first lady Patsy Lou Williamson, I am sure they would donate some money to the cause if it was reputable! They have given so much to this community already, including a $500,000 donation to the Flint Cultural Center! Wink First Lady Patsy Lou donating a lot of money to help get the guns off our streets!

Wow. Thats going to be amazing isn't it? Flint's downtown will really be enhanced by this project, and along with the other one across the street.

The Miller Block building (the former Legal Services location) is gone. This photo is from The Flint Journal:

Yup; downtown will look great. The yuppies will have their lofts. Meanwhile, young people in the neighborhoods are shooting at each other every night. We had a shootout on our street last Friday; 15 shots fired. But, since nobody was hit, it won't be reported.

so because some idiots are killing each other means that we should not let people invest in Flint and should let our downtown continue to look like crap?

sorry, its late and i'm stressed out. I think the proposed drawing looks great. pride in the downtown will encourage more investment and involvement in the city and its buildings.
