Topic: Fisher Hotel slumlord strikes again?

Fairfield Village residents, especially those around Avon and 7th, are hopping mad. For 2 years they have been dealing with 909 E. 7th, owned by Edward Usewick III, the former owner of the notorious Fisher Hotel. The Hotel was finally closed after residents took their story to the City Council and the news media. They told of prostitutes and drug dealing going on in their residential neighborhood near Windiate Park where the hotel was located. It was finally closed and the tenants relocated.

For almost 2 months the residents of 909 E 7th did not take their trash out to the street. As a result cockroaches are everywhere and nearby homeowners are scrambling to keep these pests out of their homes. They have called and even gone down to code enforcement to voice their disapproval of the way the city has handled this problem house. Weighill has visited and asked the administration to help, buit they won't work with him. Eason's secretary tried to help and code enforcement told her the problem had been solved. She was angry when she found out that was untrue.

The code enforcement division of the Brown and Walling administrations turned a deaf ear to the complaints of residents about vicious dogs, trash, broken windows, and an unsafe roof in the home. There were 12 broken windows and the roof in some places is collapsing.Residents were told they complained too much and recently were told the enforcement of this house was "blocked".

With the cockroaches visible on even the outside of the house, Ron of Sunset Investments told residents he was renting the house out as of September 1st and there was nothing they could do about it. He told Leslie Alston there had never been any dogs in the house.

Three members of the blight control team came to the house and residents told them what to do. They took pictures and the next week they went back for retraining.

Today the residents were told the house had been condemned and the Mayor stopped it! The Flint Journal blog on the story of Usewick's arrest in another case said Usewick and Ridgeway White were friends for over 20 years. Ridgeway was seen driving a car with a sticker from Executive Auto, owned by Usewick. residents can only wonder if this is why the condemnation is blocked.

Child Protective Services failed to respond until the water was shut off and cockroaches ran all over the house. The owner of the pit bulls stopped taking them outside when they kept escaping and frightened neighbors. The feces could be smelt outside. The children received aid while their father lived in the home. The father continued to drive after his license was suspended for non payment of child support. Complaints to the Friend of the Court went unanswered although residents had a copy of the warrant for the man's arrest.

The Concerned Citizens of the Neighborhood take pride in maintaining their homes and are steadfastly tackling blight. They even took the time to draw up a form of social contract in which they detailed what they expected of the city and what they felt was their obligation to contribute to the wellbeing of their neighborhood. They look out for one another and take care of the older residents who are unable to perform tasks such as snow removal.

Submitted Photo Edward Usewick IIIGenesee County, Michigan — Arrest warrants were issued this morning for the four used car dealership owners who allegedly conducted a vehicle racketeering scheme, officials say.

Edward Usewick III, 30, of Davison; William Dempsy, 58, of Goodrich; James Lane III, 46, of Ortonville and Walter Szunko, 54, of Traverse City each face a count of racketeering and three counts of larceny by conversion in an amount of $20,000 or more, said Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton.

Usewick also has been charged with four counts of intent to pass a false title, he said. He could not be reached for comment.

As of Friday morning, he was not in custody and believed to be in Florida, Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell said.

Usewick, the owner of Auto Brokers LLC, also called Executive Auto Dealership, 4057 S. Dort Highway in Burton, acquired at least 20 vehicles from a leasing company in Andover, Mass. then sold them through a Flint car auction company using duplicate titles.

The leasing company that gave the vehicles to Usewick never got paid for the cars after they were sold, officials said.

Pickell said Flint Auto Auction and the Massachusetts leasing company were innocent victims in the alleged scam.

Those who purchased the vehicles will be left without the vehicles, which they never owned in the first place, Leyton said, and without the money they paid, he said.

“It’s similar to someone who buys a bad title to a house,” Leyton said. “They end up with nothing.”

Flint Auto Auction officials declined to comment.

Dempsy, Lane and Szunko are all believed to have helped hide the vehicles on their used car lots, Leyton said.

Dempsy operates Great Lakes Auto and Leasing, located on the same lot as Usewick’s dealership. Lane runs Lane Car Company, 2200 Ortonville Road in Ortonville, and Szunko runs Executive Auto Brokers, 2421 Branch Road in Flint, and another location in Traverse City, officials said.

Mark Latchana, Lane’s attorney, said he believes the allegations against Lane will be proven false.

“He’s a businessman and he’s always been honest and forthright with his business dealings,” Latchana said.

Lane will turn himself in early next week, Latchana said. He did not have information regarding the other defendants.

Dempsy and Szunko could not be reached for comment.

Pickell said at least 24 vehicles worth more than $310,000 have been recovered but about 40 more vehicles are believed to have been stolen and at least two other financial institutions lost money.

The Genesee Auto Theft Investigation Network continues to investigate.

Usewick has been a friend of mine for many years and I can truly say that its highly unlikely that he would just shoot himself in the foot like this. There is definitely more that will come out about this.

It's nice that you and Usewick are buddies.
You probably know about the $400,000 in NSF checks he wrote in Lansing last year then right???

I'm SURE he told you about it.

Call the Lansing Auto auction if you doubt me !!

Usewick also has charges pending in Federal court for larceny by conversion relating to a mortgage scam. He was picked up by the Fed back last May at the auction. The funny thing is he thinks he untouchable. I wonder if Ridgeway White from the Mott Foundation had anything to do with his 20+ year best friends scam...

Spoke to a friend from Grand Blanc who helped a daughter buy a home off Fenton Road. Sadly the house next door is owned by Usewick and they have fought to get more than one drug dealer out of that house.

Ron of Sunset Investments says he is the rental agent for 909 E 7th and he told residents he doesn't do background checks because no one would qualify otherwise. He also told the city there had been no dogs in the house. Everyone must have imagined those pit bulls and their puppies.
But, then he also said no cockroaches too. Code enforcement left the house spraying their legs to make sure they had no hitchhikers. Pity the people that are suppossed to move in on September 1.

The house was finally posted. Neighbors have helped seniors by spraying the area around the condemned house and the seniors house with raid max.

Flint employees tell residents they must live with roach infested house in their midst,
The roaches are advancing despite efforts to keep them at bay. The city says there is no entity that can hekp the residents subjected to this menace. Two senior housing units are mere blocks away. Roaches are associated with disease and asthma related illnessnes.

Avoid Cockroach Disease by Avoiding Cockroaches
Cockroach disease is something that many people are worried about when they see a cockroach in their home. Cockroaches are known to carry disease because they can live on just about anything, meaning they often live on unsanitary substances. When you look at the cockroach anatomy you might only get creepy crawly sensations, but chances are there is a lot more there than that. Cockroaches really are the dirty bugs that you think they are; so don't discount your feelings about them!

Cockroach disease can affect humans. Cockroaches are known to carry diseases like dysentery, typhoid and poliomyelitis, as well as gastroenteritis. Cockroaches can live just about anywhere, and can live on fermenting products, septic dressings, hair, leather, wallpaper, feces, rotting food, and more. Because many of the products that cockroaches feed on are spoiled or simply unsanitary, it's easy to see where cockroach disease comes from. Many of the substances that they feed on are already contaminated, and as the cockroach moves from one location to another it spreads the disease along the way.

Not only can people get sick from the diseases that cockroaches contaminate human living space with, many humans are allergic to cockroach feces. Of course, no one exposes themselves to cockroach disease and feces on purpose, but it can happen by inhaling particles of dust in the air that has been left behind by the cockroach. Food can also be contaminated with the smell of cockroaches, which is very distinct. Food can have particles of feces, salivary gland secretions, as well as dead insects if it has not been stored properly. If people eat food that has not been properly stored they can be exposed to all of these things, which can cause asthma as well as other health conditions to those that are sensitive.

Cockroach disease is nothing to fool around with. Even if you just don't like bugs, you have to consider the disease and filth that these insects bring into your home. Cockroach control is very important because you cannot always see, smell, or even taste the presence of cockroaches, yet you can ingest these items and become sick.

Many people believe that cockroach problems will take care of themselves, or if you haven't seen all that many cockroaches there is no need to worry. The fact is, because you often don't see the cockroaches that live in your home, you always have to worry if you see even one or two roaches. Cockroach disease can spread fast, and when you consider that cockroaches often hang out in the kitchen and places where food preparation takes place, you'll want to nip the problem in the bud!

The cockroaches have advanced down the street. This is an area of professional people who can't believe this is happening to them. Cockroaches are continuing to breed and can be seen on the outside of the house at 909 E. 7th.

What ever happened to the principle that the city enforced laws to protect the health, safety and welfare of it's citizens? The city eliminated their health department many years ago and the county just lost 6 more health department employees.

The city through Eason has indicated they can only have the landlord board the house up. The landlord, Edward usewick claims the neighbors complain so much he will let the house go to the Landbank in March, 2011 when it is up for foreclosure. Since he hasn't paid the taxes in over 2 years on this and other properties, I am sure he wants to make these concerned residents his scapegoats.

The residents knew the previous owner who lost the home to a tax sale and knew the poor condition of the home. They were appalled whrn city inspectors approved it for rental. The tenants, like so many of Usewicks tensnts, tore the house up more than it was, raised pit bulls, and kept it nasty. Rental agent Ron of Sunset Investments told residents they did not do background checks because they would never have any tenants.

The home is listed on Craigs list as being for rent at $700 per month, cockroaches are probably thrown in for free. Residents have advised at least 2 potential tenants the property is condemned.

Obviously, if you're connected, the laws don't apply to you. We have a similar situation on our block; a condemned house suddenly approved for occupancy without any repairs being performed.

Mr Usewick owns four houses in Carriage Town, all delinquent, all empty but just yesterday he threatened Adam Gerics, who has him tied up in court, and then said, I'm going to fill that house with very N_____ (blacks--but not the term he used at all)) and make your neighborhood miserable." He is a scum bag driving around in his Jaguar threatening people. I was amazed at his comments. I was just sitting on the stoop at Adams when he drove up and said these things.

TOO LITTLE -TOO LATE CITY MAKES PROBLEM WORSE.

The neighbors of 909 E 7th were adamant when Eason showed up in their neighborhood that something was going to be done about he cockroaches.
They advised him they were going to hold apress conference and hold the city responsible for the failure to respond to neighborhood complaints about the neglect and blight at this house.

Beck's pest control showed up today and sprayed the house, but did not use anything strong enough to kill the roaches. The roaches can be seen running down the sidewalks. Neighbors said when the worker did not wear a mask they were afraid the solution was not going to be strong enough.

The question now is how far will these roaches go and how long will this sieige last. Neighbors have already wiped out the local Gill Roys of Roachprufe (only store that carries it) and have sprayed with Check out Flint Talks cool chat room! Raid max. And the roaches still they keep coming from 909 E 7th.

PERHAPS IT IS TIME FOR A CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT AGAINST THE CITY!

Neighbors from the entire neighborhood came to talk to the exterminator. He said there were no roaches in the walls but the house was full of fleas. They were angered when he told them he had been asked to gas or bomb and he chose to use this spray, which would take one month to work, instead. When he left roaches were hanging from the outside of the house and scrambling everywhere. Seniors were throwing hot water and bleach on them for 2 hours in an attempt to impede their advance.

The neighbors have used Check out Flint Talks cool chat room! Raid max, roachprufe and regular Raid, but these pests keep on coming from 909 E 7th. The exterminator said he was not licensed to spray the lawn around the house. The lawn is overgrown and neighbors have asked the city if they can mow it . They have had no response.

When all else fails, do it yourself! If the entire neighborhood is unhappy they should be unhappy enough to take up a donation from everyone, find a licensed lawn sprayer for weed and pest control in the yellow pages, and hire them to handle the spraying of the lawn and around the perimeter of the house. Then mow the yard themselves--and don't forget to trim the shrubs and trees if there are any. They're wasting effort and getting more upset talking to people who won't do anything, or the right thing. Sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands. Who's going to complain they're trespassing? "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." It's happened in neighborhoods around the city and it seems nothing gets done unless the neighbors pitch in and do it themselves.

They had the lawns sprayed with Otho prior to this incident. The perimeters too. It failed to stop the rushing hordes of roaches. So they have taken it into their own hands. Mixtures of boric aid are keeping the adults at bay, but they continue hatching in the house at 909 E 7th. In other words the assault keeps coming because the source has not been dealt with.

There are many seniors in this area and they cannot tolerate the continuous onslaught of chemicals in their homes. The problem is so great they are battling them daily.
