I think this is good news for Flint. Scroll down to see the article about the Volt engine being built in Flint.

It's not adding new jobs, it's transferring jobs from the closing Flint North engine plant.

I'll jump off the cliff:

I think this is great news. If this is the "advanced manufacturing that stays in the US' knowledge economy," then this could be the beginning of the US having a manufacturing base again.

At any rate, the Volt is more like the kind of car I wouldn't mind over-paying for, even if it is made by Flint's ex-husband.

I wonder, when GM met with the 30 largest energy companies the other week, why couldn't they have begun to work out a deal with these energy providers whereby GM workers and plants slatted for layoffs and closings would shift gears and begin building wind turbines that could provide these energy companies with clean electric energy to power the Volt, etc.? Seems like that would be a win win win – for the energy companies, GM (truly diversifying and leveraging what its core business is "advanced manufacturing, not merely transportation"), the autoworkers, the communities that face more shuttered plants and more scarring from brownfield expansion, and a planet that should do all it can to get off fossil fuels (from the grid to the gas tank) That's an entirely new revenue stream for GM – and one that actually helps facilitate the growth, speed, and viability of their new 'old' revenue biz, with the Volt. They stuck their neck into the financing world (GMAC), only to have it lopped off. Perhaps they'd do better if they stuck with (and expanded) their core advanced manufacturing heritage – as energy creators (turbines, etc.) and energy users (Volt, buses, trains, etc.) Think bigger, Mr. Wagoner, Mr. Gettlefinger!

Great idea....mellow D, Henry and Demarelda could stand in the north end talking about OSavior and power the turbines at a great speed...could probably power the entire grid...lol
