In prison cell I sadly sit,
A d__d crest-fallen chappie!
And own to you I feel a bit-
A little bit - unhappy!
It really ain't the place nor time
To reel off rhyming diction -
But yet we'll write a final rhyme
Whilst waiting cru-ci-fixion!
No matter what "end" they decide -
Quick-lime or "b'iling ile," sir?
We'll do our best when crucified
To finish off in style, sir!
But we bequeath a parting tip
For sound advice of such men,
Who come across in transport ship
To polish off the Dutchmen!
If you encounter any Boers
You really must not loot 'em!
And if you wish to leave these shores,
For pity's sake, DON'T SHOOT 'EM!!
And if you'd earn a D.S.O.,
Why every British sinner
Should know the proper way to go
Is: "ASK THE BOER TO DINNER!"
Let's toss a bumper down our throat, -
Before we pass to Heaven,
And toast: "The trim-set petticoat
We leave behind in Devon."
Harry (Breaker) Morant 1902 |

Three Australian soldiers (Edward Woodward, Bryan Brown and Lewis Fitz-Gerald) find themselves court-martialed for murder in 1901, at the end of South Africa's bloody Boer War. With just one day to prepare a defense, attorney major J.F. Thomas (Jack Thompson) must retrace his clients' steps -- and prove they acted under orders. Based on a play by Kenneth Ross, the film won 10 Australian Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time, and one that many people have never heard of, let alone seen. It centers around the a true story of the court-marshal of a group of Australian soldiers fighting for the British against a group of white South Africans. Told from the Australian's point of view, I understand that the Australians are perhaps more sympathetic than they might have been in reality and the British less so, but that is not the issue. This story is the very definition of "Kangaroo Court," with the British politically motivated to find the defendants guilty. It is riveting, heartbreaking, sad and yet funny at times, with a sprinkling of action and not a bad actor or moment throughout. The fact that the story is true only lends weight to the action. If you are a fan of courtroom dramas such as "A Few Good Men" you must see this movie.

What is the best military film ever made? "Bridge on the River Kwai?" "Patton?" "Twelve O'Clock High?" What is the best trial film ever made? "Twelve Angry Men?" "To Kill a Mockingbird?" "Anatomy of a Murder?" What is the best film about a military trial? "The Caine Mutiny?" "The Court Martial of Billy Mitchell?" "Rules of Engagement?" "A Few Good Men?" I think the clear winner in this category is "Breaker Morant," the true story of British high-handedness in the Boer War - England's precursor to Vietnam, circa 1900. Splendid performances are turned in by relatively unknown Australians in the story of "special forces" colonialists doing the King's dirty work, and then set up as scapegoats when England wants out. Lawyers will relish Jack Thompson's portrayal of an inexperienced barrister rising to the occasion against impossible odds. His first cross is a classic, but there's much more here than trial tactics. "Breaker" has more irony, humor, quotable dialogue, action, and tragedy than can be hinted at in 200 words. But here's my favorite: "Live every day as if it were your last, for one day you're sure to be right." "Breaker Morant" is on my "island list".

An excellent story with superb acting in a timeless story. Much better than 90% or more of the movies being produced today. I highly recommend it.

Breaker Morant is best described as "the finest strip of celluloid through which light has ever past." Or ever will. This film is a masterpiece that exceeds all others, even in the storied history of English speaking productions. In it are captured flawlessly every conceivable emotion available to any thinking individual. There is so much more to do, which I shall do in a letter to the director of this timeless work of art, Bruce Beresford. Rene Saunts

The Boer War was the first war where one side did not wear uniforms and the word Commando was coined. BREAKER MORANT is a first rate court room drama and we have great performances throughout, tough guys, railroaded by jerks, never really having a chance, they joke about there death and turn down chances to escape. Very timely subject and wonderful done.

Well written and well acted. A nice bit of history thrown in to teach while being entertained at the same time. The entire family enjoyed the movie.
