October 2013 Flint homicide was over gang turf, Genesee County Prosecutor's Office says

FLINT, MI – An October 2013 shooting that left one man dead and a woman injured was over a gang turf dispute, according to the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office.
Drake James Jr. was taken to Hurley Medical Center around 7:30 p.m. Oct. 9 after he was shot in the back during a large fight outside Grant's Grocery, 101 E. Ruth Ave., on the city's north side. Four men have been charged in the case this month with felony murder and are lodged in the Genesee County Jail.
The men also are charged with gang membership felonies – meaning committing a crime on behalf of the gang. It's a rare charge that was only used three times in 2012, according to court records.
Dawntay McDaniel, 35, Ashton Kirkland, 25, Jamun Hinson, 32 and Richard Jones, 24, are the men charged. John Potbury, special assistant prosecutor said the men were part of the Gundy Hood gang.
"It involved these gang members trying to extort money from the victims -- i.e. gang told the victims they had to pay money in order to be on their turf (the party store)," he wrote in an email.
The four also are charged with blackmail and assault with intent to murder.
After being listed in good condition, James died a little more than one hour later at the hospital.
The men have a preliminary examination scheduled for May 27. |
