After alcohol woes, Treasurer Dillon not paying child support

by Steve Neavling / Published today /

The treasurer, who makes $174,000 a year, has failed to pay more than $5,000 in child and spousal support after just three months of divorce.

Andy DillonTrouble continues to follow state Treasurer Andy Dillon.

Two months after we reported the Redford Democrat checked into an addiction-treatment center for substance abuse, court records show Dillon’s wages will be garnished soon because he has failed to pay more than $5,000 in child and spousal support after just three months of divorce.

A Wayne County judge ordered the garnishment last week. It’s unclear why Dillon, who earns $174,000 a year, is not making the payments.

Since the divorce, Dillon has been staying in a Lansing hotel and at a friend’s house. People close to the treasurer told us two months ago that Dillon’s drinking was affecting his job and mood.

Dillon has declined to comment.

The personal problems come at a challenging time. Under the state’s emergency manager law, Dillon has unprecedented influence over financially struggling cities and school districts. In the past three years, Dillon has declared financial emergencies in Hamtramck, Detroit, Allen Park, Inkster, Detroit Public Schools, Highland Park School District and Muskegon Heights School District.

Treasurer Dillon: Court is wrong about child support payments

by Steve Neavling / Published today /

Dillon's wife says the court made the right decision.

DillonState Treasurer Andy Dillon is fighting a court’s contention that he has failed to pay alimony and child support payments of more than $5,000.

Wayne County Judge Susan Hubbard informed Dillon on July 2 that his paycheck would be withheld because of delinquent payments that soon could reach $10,000. But Dillon’s attorney, James Harrington, told us today that he believes the court made an error.

“There is confusion at the Friend of the Court,” Harrington said. “I am working with them to resolve this.”

Harrington said Dillon was not supposed to begin making alimony and child support payments until his ex-wife, Carol Owen-Dillon, moved out of their Redford home – and that hasn’t happened yet.

Carol Owen-Dillon remembers it differently.

“We’ve been trying to get him to pay since March because he knows we can’t leave without spousal and child support,” Owen-Dillon told me.

Whatever the case, the legal entanglement is the latest distraction in Dillon’s personal life. Earlier this year, Dillon briefly checked into an addiction-treatment center for substance abuse problems.

The distractions come at an unfortunate time.

Is Michigan Treasurer Andy Dillon A Deadbeat Dad?

Judge Garnishes Paycheck For Not Paying Child Support

Andy Dillon 2
Michigan Treasurer Andy Dillon has had his paycheck garnished for not paying child support.

A Wayne County judge has garnished Michigan Treasurer Andy Dillon’s state paycheck because has failed to pay $5000 in child support to his ex-wife of three months.

It is unclear why Dillon who makes $174,000 a year as Treasurer and has been living in hotels and at homes of a friends since he and his wife have separated has been unable to pay his child support.

Dillon’s drinking could be the main cause of the problems. Dillon’s drinking problem has been an open secret in metro-Detroit since he was freshman member of the Michigan Legislature nearly a decade ago. Dillon’s reputation of trying to impress shot girls and waitresses with his drinking prowess by slamming shots of Grey Goose at Sandy’s on the Beach and at Cinco De Mayo’s is the stuff of legend in his old Michigan House district of Redford Township.

It was reported in May that Dillon checked himself into a five day treatment center on the outskirts of Detroit because his drinking was affecting his job as state Treasurer. According to Steve Neavling at the Motor City Muckraker, “People close to the treasurer told us two months ago that Dillon’s drinking was affecting his job and mood.”

Dillon’s demons with alcohol and not paying child support comes as the Michigan Department of Treasury begins amassing unprecedented control over struggling local communities. Since becoming Treasurer in 2011, Dillon has placed Emergency Financial Managers in Hamtramck, Detroit, Allen Park, Inkster, Detroit Public Schools, Highland Park School District and Muskegon Heights School District. All of whom report directly to him.
