FLINT, MI -- Police were called to Flint Southwestern Classical Academy for a report of a large fight Thursday morning, June 11, as the high school dismissed students for the summer.

Few details were released, but about half a dozen police cruisers from several agencies were in the school's parking lot as students were dismissed for summer vacation.

Students were dismissed at 11:05, and police were called about 10 minutes later.

Police at the scene confirmed a fight occurred, and said no injuries were reported.

No further information was immediately available.

This is what happens when you merge schools and bring rival ganga into lose contact!

This fight was reported because it happened during school hour. There have been at least to fights at the closed Northern site night with police response, but no media reports. Also large fights in apartment complexes and other locations are ignored.

When I was asked if there was a gang in Flint that wanted to kill police, I had to think hard. The Fifth ward did post a lot of FTP or F**k the police.

Yesterday I saw "police klla" painted on the side of a commercial building at Hamilton and Saginaw. it was with some tagger graffiti and no gang signs. Still, it must be discomforting for police in that area to see.

The June 2015 edition of the East Village Magazine has a story entitled "After Shootings, CCNA hears updates, options" by Ashley O'Brien.

It was impressive to note the College Cultural Neighborhood Association had nearly 100 residents at their meeting for guest speakers, Police Chief Tolbert and Director of Planning and Development Megan Hunter.

Mike Herriman, chair of the CCNA crime watch led a discussion of recent shootings that had many in the neighborhood worried. I think this is the first time I have learned of a meeting where both sides of the combatants, Melinda Kelly and Kevin Palmer, were there to confront one another. The escalation of violence resulted in one woman being shot in the leg and retaliation shootings according to Herriman. Herriman also stated that police raided both homes and made two arrests while looking for two more individuals.

Tolbert took exception to Herriman's announcement that anonymous reports of suspicious crime and documentation could be sent to P.O. Box 375, Flint, MI 48503. Tolbert wanted the information called in to CRIMESTOPPERS at 1-800-SPEAK-UP and said the police would receive the information sooner.

(Note- callers to CRIMESTOPPERS receive a number which can be used for a reward if the tip results in a felony conviction)

Tolbert discussed challenges facing the Police Department. The department has 25 fewer officers than this time last year said Tolbert. Tolbert said criminal cases were difficult to pursue when victims refused to press charges.

Retaliation fears often prevent business owners from pursuing loitering or trespassing charges in their business parking lots, said Tolbert. According to Tolbert, there is movement towards an ordinance change that will allow the police to have jurisdiction as the complainant.

Tolbert advised the group to participate in a radio patrol, alleging t would immediately reduce crime.

Hunter asked residents t report crime violations. Herriman raised the possibility of having residents deputized to write code violations. Hunter also wanted landlords who had not registered their rentals to Raul Garcia @810-237-2090.

School fight prompts Flint police intervention with shocking Facebook photos

Molly Young | myoung7@mlive.com By Molly Young | myoung7@mlive.com

Flint, MI -- Police called a meeting with parents of alleged members of "The Squad," after a large fight broke out at Northwestern High School earlier this month.

Parents gasped as images from social media sites of the alleged members -- their children -- posing with "weapons, dope and guns" were displayed in a slideshow during the meeting at the Flint Police Department Wednesday afternoon, June 17.

An investigation into a large fight at Northwestern High School earlier this month led police to a group of youths who call themselves "The Squad," about 45 members ranging in age from 14 to 22 years, Flint Police Chief James Tolbert said.

The fight happened as school let out for the summer Wednesday afternoon, June 11. It was between alleged members of The Squad and non-members, police said. Police said they do not know what started the fight, or how many people were involved, except to say that there were "a lot."

After the investigation into the fight and subsequent discovery of The Squad, police sent letters to alleged members of the group and their parents, requesting they come into the Flint Police Department for a meeting with police to talk about their association with the group, said Chief James Tolbert.

Police displayed the images to parents and alleged group members after they denied involvement or association with the group, Tolbert said.

Made clear to the alleged members, Tolbert said, was that law enforcement is watching them closely.

"What we told them was they are now targets. We know who they are," Tolbert said.

Flint police also spread the information about the group and members to other area police agencies, Tolbert said.

No further information was immediately available.

WHERE ARE ALL OF THE GUNS COMING FROM?

A Chicago gang was alleging bringing in drugs and guns. Some of the guns could be coming in from Arizona, namely Phoenix.

Last week there was a report of 5 teens on Sutton and Flushing with guns. A nearby resident confirmed they were not BB guns, but actual weapons.

Flushing and Donaldson, Sloan at Ballenger, and Berkley at Donaldson all have Hustle Avenue Boys (HAB & 812) graffiti. They also identify themselves as being East Side. They dominate an area off Lewis Street.

The social media link where an individual wrote about the youth carrying guns at Sutton and Flushing has been deleted. Probably just as well because they used their real name. They liked the comment about presence of the Hustle Avenue Boys graffiti.

I drove down Sutton between Flushing and Mackin. The house at 1359 Sutton has three pairs of hoes over the utility lines. The vacant home at 1305 Sutton has HAB. I saw this graffiti months ago, but did not recognize it as a group I was aware of. That changed when I went to the east side.

Bethel United needs to ensure their elderly parishioners are safeguarded as some of this gang graffiti is concentrated in the area of the church. A possible car jacking with a man shot and other violent activity has occurred in the vicinity of Ballenger and Flushing.

State police troopers cleared in shooting of Flint 13-year-old

FLINT, MI -- Two Michigan State Police troopers have been cleared of wrongdoing after they shot a 13-year-old boy during an early morning foot patrol on the city's north side.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said the troopers acted appropriately when they returned fire June 22 on a group of people who began shooting at them during their patrol.

The two fully uniformed troopers were patrolling on foot shortly after midnight near Trumbull and Myrtle avenues when they noticed three people walking toward them through a vacant lot, according to Leyton.

Leyton said the troopers identified themselves and shined a light on the three subjects, who then allegedly ran away.

The troopers were chasing the trio on foot when one of the three suspects began firing at the troopers, Leyton said. The troopers returned fire.

All three suspects fled the scene, but investigators were able to track down the 13-year-old after he reported being shot. Leyton said the teen claimed the shooting happened during a separate incident and was not related to the chase, but police investigators said they believe he was shot by the troopers.

The boy was hospitalized with a non-life threatening injury.

Leyton said it is not yet known if the teen was the one who allegedly shot at the troopers, but he added the investigation revealed the troopers were acting in self-defense.

The troopers initially were placed on administrative leave but were allowed to return to duty after being cleared, according to Michigan State Police Lt. David Kaiser.

Troopers will continue conducting foot patrols inside the city despite the incident, state police officials said.

The other two suspects have not yet been identified. No charges have been filed in the case.

Kaiser said the state police have created a tip line specific to the case. Anyone with information is asked to call 877-616-4677.

This was a really hot topic that generated over 120 very divided comments. On TV the State Police stated their directed patrols and other tactics are succeeding. If that is the case, then why are we seeing so much violence, especially among the very young.

If the State Police are trying to work on illegal gun cases, then why are so many very young carrying weapons. I have heard of at least three instances in the last 10 days with teens flaunting weapons.
