Man in Flint in good condition after shot in the leg following attempted armed robbery

Published: Sunday, September 16, 2012, 11:21 AM Updated: Sunday, September 16, 2012, 11:23 AM

By Roberto Acosta | racosta1@mlive.com

FLINT, MI -- A man is in good condition after he was shot once in the leg following an attempted armed robbery late Friday evening on Fenton Road.

Police were called to Fenton shortly after 10 p.m. where the victim said he was walking south when a maroon, late 1990s model Pontiac Grand Am with tinted windows pulled alongside him, according to a police report.

An unknown man in the front passenger seat got out of the car, with a silver semi-automatic handgun visible and told the victim to give him all his money.

The victim told the man he only had pop cans, and the suspect once again asked for money before the victim attempted to run away.

Three shots were then fired at the victim, and he was struck once in the right leg. He was treated at Hurley Medical Center and listed in good condition.

I am sickened by this violence. Moreover, it is awful that the taxpayers have complaining about the violence for a long time and no solutions are offered. It is obvious that outsiders are running the city. People that live outside of Flint, don't really care, and I feel from responses from outsiders that if something horrific happens to a Flint resident is does not matter. Kind of like it is expected. so sad.

Shooting deaths since Friday push Flint homicide count past 50 for third year in a row

Published: Monday, September 17, 2012, 7:05 PM Updated: Monday, September 17, 2012, 7:30 PM

By David Harris | dharris5@mlive.com

FLINT, MI --For the third consecutive year, Flint has reached 50 homicides in one year.

Three homicides on Sunday brought the city's homicide total to 51, according to the Flint Journal's count. There have been four homicides since Friday.

Here's a look back at the 51 lives lost to violence in Flint this year,
The pace of homicides this year is ahead of both 2011, when there were 57 homicides all year, and the record-breaking year 2010, when there were 66 homicides.

The city didn't record its 50th homicide last year until late October. In 2010, it hit 50 homicides in the first half of October, according to Journal records.

For the people who live in the neighborhoods where the homicides occurred, the violence is all too common.

"I usually hear a lot of shooting," said Belinda Brown, 59, who lives in the area of Lawndale and Pasadena where a 21-year-old man was gunned down early Sunday. "When we moved in about 30 years ago, the neighborhood was a lot nicer. Now, you can't even sit outside."

The latest homicide was a shooting and hit and run that left a 16-year-old boy dead.

Police say the teen was shot around 8 p.m. Sunday near Home and Glenn avenues before stumbling into the street and collapsing. Police believe he then was struck by a vehicle, which then fled the scene.

He was taken to Hurley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Antonio "Lil Tony" Bell Jr., 14, is the youngest person killed in Flint this year.

Bell was gunned down June 8 by a group of eight people after he was lured to Mott Park, his mother Cheryl Richard-Dobson said.

"We didn't know anything about gangs until he died," she said. "What could he have done at 14 years old to have them shoot him down like a dog?"

Family members claim Bell was killed by teens affiliated with three different gangs that are established within a half-mile of their home near West Corunna Road and West Court Street.

Last week, police arrested 15-year-old D'Angelo Y. Sawyers. He is charged with murder, carrying a concealed weapon and felony firearms. Court records also show that Kewon M. Harris, 16, also is charged with the same counts in the case. He is lodged in the Genesee County Jail without bond.

Genesee County Commissioner Omar Sims, D-Flint, said many of this year's shootings have been intended to settle a score, but have also left innocent bystanders dead.

"People are taking the law into their own hands," Sims said. "We do need more (police) officers, but .. more people have got to get engaged. We all have to get involved."

Sims said the city's violent crime needs to be addressed with jobs and in the school system. He said change will take time.

"It didn't happened overnight. Don't expect it to be resolved overnight," he said.

Richard-Dobson said she kept her son home from his last day of eight grade at McKinley Middle School.

"I knew it was a problem," she said after her son started getting threatening phone calls. "I tried to stop it before it got this far."

Bell's older brother Marques Richard-Sykes said he wants prosecutors to charge all those involved as adults. If they're charged as juveniles, Richard-Sykes said, they'll get out of prison and be able to live their lives.

"People ask the question, 'Why not leave Flint?'" Richard-Sykes said. "Flint's not causing these deaths. It's the parents and the justice system."

At about 7 a.m. Sunday, 21-year-old Devincio Lewis, the 50th homicide victim, was found in the street on Lawndale Avenue near Pasadena, shot multiple times. He was taken to Hurley Medical Center, where he died Sunday afternoon, police said.

About 6 hours earlier, police found one man shot in the head in a vehicle located on East York Avenue near Industrial Avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman was shot in the leg, and was treated and released.

Early Friday morning, Flint police found Adrian Ray Key Jr. unresponsive and suffering from gunshot wounds at a home at 733 E. Philadelphia Blvd., just south of East Pierson Road. Police said a home invasion led to the shooting.

There has been no suspect information released in any of the cases.

Flint Police Public Safety Director Alvern Lock said a key to solving the cases is the help of citizens.

"We are in a partnership with citizens of the city of Flint," said Lock. "We can only do this with the help of the citizens. If a citizen calls us, we will follow up with that information to try to get some of these cases closed."

Anyone with information is asked to call Flint Police at 810-237-6801 or CRIMESTOPPERS at 1-800-422-JAIL.

Staff writers Dominic Adams and Ron Fonger contributed to this report.

Warrant issued for suspect in 2010 Flint killing of Marcus Bishop

Published: Monday, September 17, 2012, 5:45 PM

By Gary Ridley | gridley@mlive.com

FLINT, MI -- A warrant was issued today for a suspect believed to be responsible for fatally shooting Marcus Bishop several times in the head at a known drug house May 27, 2010.

Ricco Holmes, 29, is charged with first-degree premeditated murder, felon in possession of a firearm and felony firearm for shooting Bishop at a home at 6714 Eastmount Drive.

Holmes is currently serving 7 years, 2 months to 15 years at Ryan Correctional Facility after pleading guilty in 2011 to second-degree murder for the death of Lennon Johnson Jr. He was also sentenced to serve two years for felony firearms.

Flint Police Sgt. Mike Angus said the warrant comes after following up on tips and information he obtained during his investigation into the Howard Boys gang.

Angus, who serves on the Southside Task Force, said that Holmes is not a member of the Howard Boys Gang.

Holmes has an extensive criminal history, including serving prison time for: breaking and entering a vehicle with damage, carrying a concealed weapon, felon in possession of a firearm and possession of less than 25 gram of cocaine.

Bishop, a 2002 Westwood Heights graduate, loved to cook, listen to music and play video games, previously said his mother Dorothy Crowder.

He had taken classes at Mott Community College, said Crowder, who Bishop lived with.

Bishop was Crowder's youngest child and he loved spending time with his two nephews and three nieces, she said.

However, Bishop, too, had a criminal past.

He was sentenced to 4 years, 9 months to 10 years in prison for assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder in 2005 and served 30 days in jail for attempted third-degree fleeing a police officer in 2003.

The black children need father figures living in the homes. Education needs to be priority one after fathers. No, I don't mean throw more money to education, stress the value of education to the children. Babies out of wedlock, 7 out of 10 black babies born to single mothers. Black leaders need to step up to the challenge. Real leaders, not welfare pimps like Jackson, sharpton, berry.
Wake up black people before it's too late!
