Family identifies Flint homicide victim as Ryan Stinson; Son was murdered in 2010

Published: Monday, March 05, 2012, 6:00 PM Updated: Monday, March 05, 2012, 6:09 PM

By David Harris | dharris5@mlive.com
.
FLINT, Michigan -- Family has identified the man who was shot and killed inside a convenience store about 9 p.m. Sunday as Ryan Stinson, 42.

Police have not officially identified the victim and declined to release any further details.

This is the second time a shooting death has struck the Stinson family. Stinson's son, Ryan Ervin, was the first homicide victim of 2010. Ervin, 19, was shot Feb. 19, 2010, at a home near Marvin and Damon streets during an argument. He died two days later. Three people were charged and convicted in the death.

"It's just crazy," said Stinson's brother, Janar Stinson, shaking his head.

Stinson said his brother took Ervin's death "real hard."

Stinson graduated from Flint Northern High School in the late 1980s, his brother said. He played linebacker on the football team.

He later enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Gulf War, his family said.

Stimson was a big sports fan, his family said. "He wouldn't miss a Lions game for nothing," Janar Stinson said.

Janar Stinson said he was "still in shock" about his brother's death.

"He was my only brother," said Stinson. "He taught me everything I know."

Funeral arrangements are pending. Ryan Stinson also is survived by a daughter, who is in her early 20s.

Flint Township crime becoming 'increasingly more violent,' says police chief after 55-year-old woman gunned down at gas station

Published: Monday, March 05, 2012, 4:45 PM Updated: Monday, March 05, 2012, 4:48 PM

By David Harris | dharris5@mlive.com

FLINT TOWNSHIP, Michigan -- Crime is becoming "increasingly more violent" in Flint Township, says the police chief following a homicide and carjacking.

The violence escalated around 9 p.m. Sunday as Leslie M. Mills, 55, of Grand Blanc Township was shot dead at the Mobile -- One-Stop gas station at 4107 Corunna Road. Her car was taken.

Police found her vehicle a short time later and arrested five people. They have not been charged.

"In the last couple of months, crime has been steady, although what we've seen is that crime has become increasingly more violent," said Chief George Sippert. "There are more weapons involved."

Neighbors of Mills expressed their shock at what happened.

"That's just terrible," said Jackie Scott, a retired teacher who has lived in the building next door since 1995. "I introduced myself once, and I know she was married. I have talked to her, like you do with neighbors ... They were very quiet."

Mills' husband declined comment.

Sunday night's homicide and last month's shootout between family members at a home on Casaloma Court in a dispute over a homicide in the city of Flint are examples of the increasing level of violence in Flint Township, Sippert said..

Township Trustee Frank Kasle said he has seen a slight increase in property theft crimes in the township. He called Sunday's homicide "terrible."

"I'm always concerned about crime," said Kasle. "I think we need to do what we can to control it, including having a good police department, which I think we do."
Sunday's is the third homicide in the township since November. Two people were found stabbed to death in their Clovertree Apartment apartment on Nov. 26. A man was arrested and charged in the death.

There were four homicides last year, and two each in 2009 and 2010.

According to the latest FBI statistics, the township saw a slight increase (from 215 to 260) in violent crimes in 2010 over the previous year. The most notable increases were in robbery (from 79 to 101) and aggravated assault (from 115 to 134).
.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said Mills was a "random victim," just trying to get home from work on Sunday night.

"This is a very disturbing crime," Leyton said today. "This is a random victim. This is not two drug dealers going at it."

William Welch, 52, who lives near the gas station, said he was sleeping during the incident and didn't hear anything. When he left for work about 10:30 p.m., he saw all the commotion outside.

"This kind of incident does not happen in this area," said Welch. "I never even thought something like this would happen."

Welch said he goes to the store every day and walks to work in the area.

"I walk by there every day and I always feel safe," he said.

FYI: David "Mc" Leyton is off planning and soliciting fundraising to get re-elected. Brickstreet in GB 7pm Thurday if you've got a $100 bucks to "donate." This is his main concern, not helping victims of violence. Did you know that Ed Usewick, the same guy that made headlines all over town last Feb when leyton prosecuted him for felonies, not just 24 months later is one of leyton's outspoken supporters? Imagine that? Leyton arrests this guy and turns around and takes his "donation?" The problem with Flint is the BIG CROOKS do not care about the rest of the city or it's residents. To fix Flint, you need a prosecutor that will actually do the work.

Posing as the police: Two shootings since mid-March in Flint where criminals claimed to be cops

Published: Friday, April 13, 2012, 7:50 AM Updated: Friday, April 13, 2012, 8:35 AM

By David Harris | dharris5@mlive.com

FLINT, MI -- There have been two shootings since mid-March -- one of them deadly -- in which criminals announced themselves as police before barging into a home.

The latest occurred early Sunday morning when a neighbor said he heard a man yell police before kicking in the door at a home on Neilson Street in Flint.

At first he thought it was the police, said the neighbor, Scott Stamper.

But he then realized that the suspect never further announced himself as police and then Stamper heard gunshots.

"I knew that something bad was going on in there," said Stamper, who said he also saw a Crown Victoria similar to a police vehicle leave the scene of the shooting.

Police have declined to say whether or not the suspects were posing as police in this case. Two men were arrested and are lodged in the Genesee County Jail awaiting charges.

The slayings came less than a month after an incident that occurred around 9 p.m. March 13 at home on Carmanbrook Parkway near Hammerberg and Atherton Roads.

A man told police he and his family were sleeping when armed men forced their way into his home and announced themselves as police.

The victim came out of the bedroom and saw a man in dark clothing pointing a handgun at him. The suspect fired one shot and it grazed the home's resident in the shoulder. The victim was not seriously injured and declined medical attention.

The suspect stole a 52-inch TV before fleeing. There were no arrests.

Flint Police Chief Alvern Lock said incidents involving criminals posing as police officers happen from time to time in the city, but are uncommon.

"It doesn't happen as often as people think," he said.

Lock said if someone knocks on your door and say they are the police to look outside and see if you see a police car.

"They're are going to announce that they are out there, they are not just going kick in the door and then say police," he said. "If they are not in uniform then you should definitely ask for ID."

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said he can recall only issuing an impersonating a police officer charge once.

It was a few years ago, Leyton said, when a man was going around in an old police car with a uniform and was acting like a police officer.

He declined comment on the investigation into the Easter slayings.

Stephen Todd, Flint's 911 director, said he doesn't recall any calls about impersonating a police officer.

"I'm not saying it's not happening but it's not something that's being reported to us," said Todd.

Meshelle Merritt, 45, of Flint, said she has never encountered a person impersonating a police officer, but if someone knocked on her door and stated they were the police she wouldn't open the door right away.

"I would look outside to see if there was a police car at the very least," she said. "(Impersonating a police officer) is the oldest trick in the book."

FLINT, MI -- A shooting on Forest Hill Avenue this afternoon stemmed from a dispute between neighbors, police said.

View full size(Khalil AlHajal | MLive.com)Police investigate a shooting on Forest Hill Avenue near Myrtle Avenue in Flint on Thursday.
A man was shot in the side of his chest in or outside a home on Forest Hill Avenue near Myrtle Avenue, police said.

He was later listed in good condition at Hurley Medical Center.

Police roped off the intersection and two houses with caution tape for about two hours and collected evidence including shell casings found in a driveway and in the street.

Police were unsure, based on conflicting witness accounts, whether the man was shot in or outside the home.

There were multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired on Forest Hill Avenue at different times Thursday afternoon.

Police said the gunfire was related to a dispute between neighbors.

Police identified a neighbor as a suspect, but have not yet made an arrest.

The victim is one of at least six people shot in Flint this week. Two of the victims, shot on Sunday, died.

Authorities seize 5 dogs and 2 puppies in dog fight investigation; mother arrested on unrelated warrant

Published: Wednesday, April 11, 2012, 1:11 PM Updated: Wednesday, April 11, 2012, 8:19 PM

FLINT, MI -- The Genesee County Sheriff's Office seized five dogs and two puppies today from two homes on Flint's north side during its continued investigation into an alleged dog fighting ring.

Authorities also arrested the mother of a 14-year-old Flint boy believed to be involved in the ring on unrelated warrants.

The sheriff's office seized one female dog from a house on East Bishop Avenue that was raided earlier in the week. The mother, who was not at the home at the time, was arrested by deputies as she walked up to the house.

UPDATE: Sheriff says dogs were likely tortured

Minutes later, authorities seized four dogs and two puppies from a house on the same block. Sheriff Robert Pickell said the grandmother of the 14-year-old lived at the home. No arrests happened at that home.

Pickell said none of the seized dogs were registered. They will be inspected by the county veterinarian.

The sheriff said the homes are allegedly part of a "serious dog fighting group."

Pickell said the investigation is ongoing as his office works to obtain warrants.

Three injured dogs that were seized as part of a raid on Monday have already been euthanized.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office at 810-257-3407.

Police confirm man shot to death at Pierson and Fleming roads in Flint

Published: Wednesday, April 18, 2012, 4:45 PM Updated: Wednesday, April 18, 2012, 4:51 PM

By Khalil AlHajal | kalhajal@mlive.com

FLINT, MI -- Police have confirmed that a man was killed in a shooting on Pierson and Fleming roads around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said the man was pronounced dead at the hospital after being found lying in the road at the entrance of a liquor store parking lot.

It initially wasn't clear whether the man was shot or struck by a car, but police have now said it was a gunshot that killed him.

Police have reopened the eastbound lanes of Pierson Road between Fleming Road and Kermit Street. The westbound lanes remain closed as police investigate.

Caution tape surrounding the scene initially stretched across the road to a Marathon gas station, but police later determined that the shooting took place in the liquor store parking lot and reduced the size of the closed-off area.

Several detectives were inside the store reviewing surveillance footage around 4:30 p.m.

Flint Pastor Robert McCathern had just left the funeral of homicide victim Latosha Fox when he ran into the caution tape on Pierson Road.

"People are hurting here like I've never seen in my life" he said.

"We're constantly trying to make sense of this and get in front of it. I leave one crowd at a funeral only to not be able to get through because of another fatal shooting."

"I understand (Gov. Rick Snyder) is in Afghanistan in war torn countries. What he's seeing there is happening in his own jurisdiction."

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -
Police are investigating a shooting that happened early Monday morning in Flint.

Officers were dispatched to the area of Dupont and Baltimore just before 7:30 a.m. Police had the scene roped off.

Published reports said one victim was killed and the other victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

No other details were released. This most recent shooting in flint comes just after officials release details on a new study on violence in the area.

The study suggests there may be a pattern with the ongoing crime issues in Flint.

Officials tell TV5 11 of the 18 murders in the city this year have taken place within blocks of either Clio Road or Ballenger Highway.

The city's east side has seen very little violence.
