My first comment wouldn't go thru probably because I disclosed ethinticity. But what I can tell you is that a woman went home and found her front door shot up and inside found the victim shot. They did not wait for police, they took him in their own car to the hospital and he was later pronounced dead.

Inappropriate? Alert us

That is close to me and I heard gunshots that sounded like cannons shortly before 10 pm. I quickly turned the light off in the room I was in. I remember the shots came just before Castle came on.

After two more fatal shootings, Flint emergency manager says he welcomes more state help with crime

Published: Thursday, January 19, 2012, 8:50 AM Updated: Thursday, January 19, 2012, 9:31 AM

By Ron Fonger | Flint Journal

FLINT, Michigan -- Just hours after two people were found shot to death late Wednesday, Emergency Manager Michael Brown said he's ready for more crime-fighting help from the state.

"We're definitely open to more involvement and assistance," Brown said this morning."The (Michigan) State Police has been helpful to the city of Flint so far ... There's ongoing discussions. We are putting some (additional) plans together."

During his State of the State address Wednesday, Gov. Rick Snyder said he wants to work on improving the crime rate in Michigan cities, including Flint, in 2012.

Less than three weeks into 2012, six people have been victims of homicide in Flint, including two on Saturday, one on Tuesday, and two Wednesday.

Brown said this morning that he had not yet been briefed on the discovery of two bodies found near a burning car at about 11:40 p.m. Wednesday on Raskob Street near Ballenger Highway.

Firefighters, responding to the fire call, said they found a man and a woman shot to death up against a fence a few feet away from the blaze.

Police said in a news release this morning the identities of the two bodies are unknown. Anyone with information regarding the incident can call Sgt. Cynthia Herfert at 810-237-6944.

Flint sees rush of homicides to start 2012 after slow end to last year

Published: Wednesday, January 18, 2012, 2:34 PM Updated: Wednesday, January 18, 2012, 7:54 PM

By David Harris | Flint Journal

FLINT, Michigan — City officials hoped anti-crime measures were working when the city’s homicide rate slowed, with only four deaths in the last two months of 2011.

But a little over two weeks into 2012, four people have been victims of homicide in the city, including two on Saturday and another on Tuesday.

Emergency Manager Michael Brown last week submitted a plan to the state that calls for hiring more police officers and reopening the city jail. The plan does not detail how the proposals would be funded.

The report was made public on Tuesday, about 17 hours after Samuel E. Garner, 28, was found shot multiple times at a home on Winona Street near Welch Boulevard.

Two people also died Saturday in separate shootings.

Dalaun Morgan, 15, died after he was shot in the head in an abandoned home around 11:30 a.m. by a 16-year-old boy who police said was playing with a gun that went off.

Around 6 p.m., Aaron LaCour, 19, was shot and killed while driving on Grand Traverse near Third Street.

Charges are pending against the 16-year-old in Morgan’s death, and there have been no arrests in LaCour’s case.

"It's a matter for serious concern, there's no question about that," said Brown of the recent violence.

Officials touted partnerships, such as the increased state police patrols, which doubled the number of troopers in the city from 10 to 20 last spring, and a U.S. Attorney program handing out stiffer penalties to felons caught with guns, as a way to reduce crime.

Police Chief Alvern Lock said the latest homicides would have been hard to prevent no matter how many officers were on the street or how many partnerships between law enforcement agencies
.

Three of the homicides occurred in homes, where it’s hard to intervene, Lock said.

“It’s a societal issue,” Lock said. “We as a community need to find better ways to resolve our differences.”

Mayor Dayne Walling said there are too many guns on the street.

“Every gunshot fired in our neighborhood puts lives at risk and the tragic consequence is lives are lost,” he said. “The common factor in each homicide is guns.”

Staffing levels at the Flint Police Department have been a concern ever since 66 police officers were laid off in 2010.

Brown said the number of police officers in the city “is not at the level we think it should be.” He didn’t have an ideal number of officers, but said he could consult with Lock.

The city jail has long been touted by city officials as a way to combat crime, but has been mostly closed since 1987, except for brief stints from 1999 to 2001 and 2007 to 2008. City voters rejected a proposal to fund the jail through a 2-mill tax increase last May
.

Walling said there needs to be a review of the county’s criminal justice system and find ways to get the city jail reopened.

Brown said Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell and Prosecutor David Leyton need to be on board with plans to reopen the jail.

Abdul-Aleem Gray, 42, who lives down the street from the home where Garner was found, said the violence has more to do with the closure of schools and the lack of jobs.

"I'm tired of all this happening," said Gray, who came home early Tuesday to find police and crime tape on his street. "This neighborhood wasn't always like this. But we closed schools and there are no jobs. Once we get more education and jobs, this type of stuff won't happen."

WoW, Dayne.. what an observation! Did you think of that on your own?

Alvern Lock plays into the hands of conservatives who want to write off Flint when he says more police would not help. More police would not help the rate of homicides which occur in private dwellings, but they would help the home invasion rate, and the rampant atmosphere of lawlessness that allows young thugs to walk around neighborhoods with impunity and fire weapons randomly. Look at the Flint Police Operations website and see how much gunfire goes on with nothing done about it. This does not happen in other cities. I heard a kindergartner say "I ain't afraid of the po-po!" Now where did he get that? From his elders--who know that the Flint police are outmanned and outgunned and have a chief who expresses nothing but the helplessness of the situation.

chevy1959 January 18, 2012 at 3:39PM

Does Mr. Brown have some sort of magical, secretive process by which he requests help from the state for more police? Did he have some sort of top secret address to which to send these requests? Why couldn't Walling do that on his own before the state take over? Oh, I forgot. It's because he was too busy trying to bring business to the Flint area. seriously, how is this guy even a mayor? He's not even fit to run a fast food restaurant.

BillyLove January 18, 2012 at 4:43PM

And let's not forget that the voters of Flint continue to re-elect the current city council and mayor. Vote in the clowns, you get clowns.

(NOTE: PICKELL HAS VOICED DISAPPROVAL OVER THE OPENING OF THE CITY JAIL OUT OF FEARS IT WOULD ADD TO HIS JAIL POPULATION)

misty4flint January 18, 2012 at 8:52PM

why wouldn't david leyton and pickell be on board with opening the jails? what does the emergency manager suspect about the prosecutor and the sherrif? does he think they are lazy or not wanting to do their jobs or allocate money from their own departments....obviously he is wary that they may not be on board? Why is that?

“It’s a societal issue,” Lock said. “We as a community need to find better ways to resolve our differences.”

It's not a "societal" problem, it's a cultural problem. The same problem is evident in cities where the same large culture exist (i.e. Detroit, St. Louis).

The Poverty rate in the U.S. is the same for all races. There’s no reasonable explanation for the saturation of crime in one culture.

There should be “Zero Tolerance” rule applied instead of pushing it off on society to deal with. We’re never going to get anywhere if we let them keep blaming society while hitting us on the head and stealing our wallets. Society has bent over backwards to accommodate this particular culture and every time you turn around they have another problem, like the Confederate Flag.

Lock forgets that the “community” in Flint is more than just one culture and it’s their human right to be protected against this type of hostility.

Murder trial delayed against Flint man accused in 2008 killing of 14-year-old boy

FLINT, Michigan -- Unable to find witnesses in the trial for a man accused of killing a 14-year-old boy four years ago, a judge on Friday dismissed the charges.

But the man isn't going free.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said his office immediately re-filed the charges against the suspect, Francisco Javier Sanchez.

Sanchez's trial was set to begin Wednesday but prosecutors could not locate key witnesses in the case. Genesee Circuit Judge Joseph Farah then dismissed the charges, said Leyton.

Francisco Sanchez
Sanchez, 24, is charged with first-degree murder for the July 26, 2008, death of George E. Green Jr.

"We've already sworn the warrant back out," Leyton said Friday. "Mr. Sanchez has already been recharged."

Sanchez's defense attorney, Glenn Cotton, said he expected the charges to be reauthorized.

Leyton said his office has had to rely on the police to track down subpoenaed witnesses since the prosecutor's office no longer has funding for its own investigators.

Green was struck by a gunshot near his left eye during a shootout on the city's east side, according to witness testimony at Sanchez's preliminary hearing two years ago.

Green died two days after the shooting.

Gavin Thomas Won, 33, of Flint, who was also charged with murder and later pleaded guilty to manslaughter, testified that the evening of the shooting he had intended to confront and fight a drug dealer who provided him with phony crack cocaine.

The drug dealer, driving a maroon Lincoln Navigator, went to meet Won near Iowa and Jane streets. During the meeting, a man exited the back of the SUV and began shooting, Won testified.

Won said he returned gunfire, adding that Sanchez also began firing from behind him.

Sanchez's brother, Valentin Sanchez, 27, of Flint, also faced murder charges in the incident. He pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence for picking up shell casings after the shootout.

A new court date for Sanchez has not been set.
