Drunk With Power, Spending Out of Control
Thursday, August 25, 2005

By Radley Balko

The Washington Post reports that in 1987, President Ronald Reagan vetoed a transportation bill passed by Congress because it had 157 "earmarks"— money set aside for Congress members' pet projects that would ostensibly be considered too wasteful to pass as laws on their own merit.

Reagan made a show of his veto. It was a symbolic stroke against government waste, against the Democrats’ tradition of, for example, diverting every federal highway through West Virginia, then naming it after Sen. Robert Byrd.

Fast-forward to 2005. Republicans control the White House and both houses of Congress. Early on a Saturday morning in August — the day of the week, and the month of the year, least likely to attract media attention — President Bush signed into law a highway bill passed by his own party with more than 6,000 earmarked projects.

Bush signed the bill after sternly telling his party he'd veto any highway bill that spent more than $256 billion. He promptly "adjusted" that figure to $284 billion after complaints from party leaders. The bill Bush ultimately signed came at a price of $286 billion, $295 billion if you count a few provisions disguised to make the bill look cheaper than it actually is. Not exactly holding the line.

The Republican Party's wholesale abandonment of limited government principles has been on display since President Bush took office. Government spending under the GOP's reign has soared to historic highs, any way you want to measure it. And in stark contrast to President Reagan — or even the president's own father—President Bush refuses to rein in spending. He hasn’t used his veto a single time since taking office — the longest such streak in U.S. history.

continues to amaze, however, is the sheer arrogance and hubris with which the Republicans have chosen to govern. As Congressman Jeff Flake — one of the few principled Republicans in Washington — told the Washington Post, "Republicans don't even pretend anymore."

Consider that highway bill. The bill calls for nearly half a billion dollars to build two bridges in Alaska. One will connect the Alaskan mainland with a tiny island called Gravina (population: 50). It will cost U.S. taxpayers $230 million. In fact, when it comes to pork barrel politics, Alaska is the new West Virginia. That's because Alaska Rep.Don Young chairs the transportation committee. The transportation bill is named after Young's wife. The second bridge the bill appropriates money for — another $230 million — will be called "Don Young Way."

Robert Byrd would be proud.

You'd think that a Republican like Young would at least be embarrassed about all of this. He isn't. He's shameless. Upon hearing that only one other lawmaker in the entire Congress had outdone him in securing pork barrel projects, Young told the New York Times, "I'd like to be a little oinker, myself. If he's the chief porker, I'm upset."

Consider the case of Sen. Tom Coburn, another of the few in Congress willing to stand up to unrestrained spending. After a six-year career fighting waste in the House, Coburn won election to the Senate, and began putting administrative holds on his colleagues' wasteful projects. That didn't sit well with his fellow Republicans. Coburn's own party soon filed an ethics complaint against him.

His transgression? Coburn continues his medical practice in Oklahoma in addition to his duties as a U.S. senator. That apparently, is a violation of Senate ethics. Diverting millions of taxpayer dollars to pet projects that bear one's name and help one get reelected is not an ethical violation, but practicing medicine is. The chairman of the Senate Ethics Committee who will hear Coburn's complaint is Mississippi Sen. Trent Lott. Lott recently told Roll Call that after 30 years as a U.S. senator, he has learned how to work around pesky do-gooders like Coburn. "I fold [pork projects] into bills where you can't find them," Lott boasted. "I've been around here long enough to know how to bury it."

But perhaps the single member of Congress most afflicted with arrogance-of-power syndrome is Virginia Rep. Tom Davis. Davis headed up the GOP's campaign to retain control of the House in 2004, and today chairs the House Government Reform Committee. Earlier this spring, it was Davis' committee that began investigating the use of steroids in Major League Baseball. Of course, Congress has no constitutional authority to tell a private organization what its rules ought to be. No matter. When MLB asked Davis what jurisdiction he had to hold hearings, Davis sent a letter in reply asserting that his committee has jurisdiction “at any time, over any matter.” Any time, any matter. So much for limited government. And this from the chair of the committee in charge of keeping government in check!

Davis later threatened sanctions against MLB if it allowed an ownership group, in which billionaire leftist George Soros held a minority stake, to purchase the Washington Nationals — a stunning, possibly illegal threat to impose legal sanctions against a private organization for doing business with someone Davis opposes politically. Just last month, Davis stuck a provision into a funding bill that would prohibit development of a housing complex in his home district. The congressman told Washington Post columnist Marc Fisher he feared “urban kind of people” moving into his district. This is exactly the kind of federal government edict over local affairs Republicans are supposed to oppose.

Local officials told Fisher that Davis has said privately he fears too much development in his district will attract too many Democrats, which could one day imperil his reelection.

Republicans swept into office in 1994 on a radical platform promising to dramatically scale back the federal government, bring accountability to Capitol Hill, and put a check on the power and arrogance that runs rampant in Washington. Today, they embody that power and arrogance.

If you’ll remember, it was Hillary Clinton’s plan for universal health care that inspired much of the backlash that put the Republicans in power. Today, the leader of the Republican revolution — Newt Gingrich — has publicly aligned himself with Hillary Clinton to call for a larger government role in health care. That’s about as apt a metaphor for what’s happened to the “Republican Revolution” as any.

By Kathy Kiely, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — As he presses for legacy-building immigration legislation, President Bush finds himself aligned with the same unlikely ally who helped enact his first major domestic initiative.
That would be Sen. Edward Kennedy, the Massachusetts Democrat who played a crucial role in crafting and passing the No Child Left Behind Act, the president's massive effort to overhaul education policy.

In a speech to the Associated General Contractors of America on May 2, Bush acknowledged Kennedy as a key player in the talks that are culminating this week, when the Senate opens an immigration debate. "I appreciate the leadership he's taken," Bush said.

Kennedy returned the favor on Saturday, praising Bush's call for a new immigration policy in the president's weekly radio address. "I thank President Bush for addressing the nation on this critical issue and emphasizing the common goals that we share," he said.

As in their earlier partnership, both men are trying to keep the outer ideological edges of their parties on board. Kennedy is working to persuade Democratic liberals to support an immigration package that's more punitive to illegal immigrants than some would like, while Bush works to convince Republican conservatives of the need to give some of those estimated 12 million illegal immigrants a chance at citizenship.

Though they may disagree over some details, Kennedy and Bush have indicated support for the same basic elements of a bill: stronger border security and more stringent enforcement of laws against hiring illegal workers; a larger "guest worker" program; and a program to legalize workers now living here illegally.

Both men have personal stakes in success. Kennedy, the grandson of Irish immigrants, has worked on every major immigration bill of the past four decades. Bush is the former governor of Texas, a state that shares a 1,240-mile border and deep ties with Mexico.

The two also have much in common personally. Both are sons of political families in which, for a time, each seemed the least likely to succeed.

Both were mediocre students at Ivy League universities: Bush jokes frequently about his academic performance at Yale; Kennedy was expelled from Harvard, though later readmitted. Both struggled with personal demons: Bush gave up alcohol at 40; Kennedy was involved in an automobile accident at 37 that resulted in the drowning of a female passenger.

Both are lightning rods. Former senator Alan Simpson, a Wyoming Republican who knows both, said they handle the withering and personal criticism in similar fashion: "They're both sensitive people. They both bruise easily and heal quick."

The nation's two famous political dynasties have been deeply entwined for generations.

As a law student at the University of Virginia, Kennedy asked Sen. Prescott Bush, the grandfather of the current president, to speak to a student group. Decades later, at the January 2002 signing ceremony for the No Child Left Behind bill, Bush acknowledged how Kennedy returned the favor by helping to pass the landmark bill. "He is a fabulous United States senator," Bush said of Kennedy. "When he's against you, it's tough. When he's with you, it's a great experience."

A year later, the president's father, former president George H.W. Bush, hosted Kennedy at his presidential library to receive a $20,000 public service award.

The elder Bush joked, "It's a well-known political fact of life, particularly here in Texas, that when you want to fire up a Republican crowd — and give them a little 'red meat' — nothing works quite like tearing away at Ted."

Simpson sees the two as practical politicians: "You've got two guys who want to see something work. Ted doesn't keep score, and I don't think the president does either. Some of the political hacks who work for them might, but that's not how they live."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Key Points Of Bush-Kennedy Amnesty Bill In More Detail

•Z Visa for Illegals. Under the plan, a new classification of visas, the "Z Visa," would be created for all illegal aliens living in the United States before January 1, 2007.

•Instant Legalization for illegals. As a first step toward receiving the Z Visa, illegals would receive confirmed legal status within 24 hours of application (and $5k fee). Thus, virtually overnight, 12-20 million illegals would become legal. No "touchback" to home country required to gain legal status and obtain probationary card.

•After "Triggers", Z Visas Issued. After certain "triggers" are met (border security, fence, background check, etc), those with probationary cards would be issued "Z nonimmigrant" visas. Z visa holders could then upgrade to "lawful permanent residence" ($4k fee) and then apply for citizenship.

•Taxpayer-Funded Benefits. Z-visa holders are eligible for medical care and primary/secondary education. Illegals would also be eligible for SS wages for wages earned as illegal if they used their own SSN. No "touchback" to home country required to obtain benefits.

•Long-Term Legal Status. Z visa holders can stay legally in our country on an indefinite basis as long as they re-up . No "touchback" to home country required to stay in country indefinitely under Z Visa.

•Direct Path to Citizenship. Z visa holders would then be able to apply for a Green Card. Only at this point would the head of household would then have to "touch back" to home country, with guaranteed re-entrance on Z-visa.

•New Temporary Worker Y-Visa Program. This program creates new visas for non-seasonal workers (Y-1; 400k yearly), agricultural (Y-2A; unlimited), non-agricultural (Y-2B; 100k yearly), and family (Y-3; 20% of Y1). Thus, at the outset, the new Y-Visa will bring over 580,000 people to our country and since the Y-2A is unlimited, likely much more.

•Triggers nearly irrelevant since they come AFTER legal status granted. The bill includes lots of verbiage on so-called "triggers" -- border security thresholds that must be met. But the fact is, illegals are given legal status IMMEDIATELY. No triggers are needed. Thus, the triggers are window dressing. Plus, once the "nose of the camel is in the tent," (i.e. illegals are made legal) there will be no stopping the camel regardless of triggers.

SUPER SLICKSTER DELEGATES TO STEAL DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION FROM OBAMA!!!!!
The super delgates and one lone Georgia voter will determine the Democratic presidential nominee. Go Georgia.[trb]

It’s called the Democratic Party, but one aspect of the party’s nominating process is at odds with grass-roots democracy. [msnbc]

I predict grass roots democrats will want Obama, the super slickster delegates will steal the nomination for Clinton.[trb]

In 2008 Hillary Clinton will amass a stockpile of super-delegates, survive disappointing showings in our national grass roots , and go on to win the nomination! [trb]

The super-delegates has the capacity to resist the choice of the overwhelming majority of primary voters and caucus participants![trb]

This nomination will still be in doubt at the end of the primary season.[trb]
This has not happened in either party in 30 years.[trb]

The party heavyweights will line up votes at the convention to swing the nomination to Hillary Clinton.[trb]

You want reality TV get ready for the national democratic convention, forget American Idol and the Big fat loser back room politcs and its sleazy underpinning will be on front street no place to run no place to hide.[trb]

Voters don’t choose the 842 unpledged “super-delegates” who comprise nearly 40 percent of the number of delegates needed to clinch the Democratic nomination.[msnbc]

Good Morning Flint! Conducted an exclusive interview with a Republican Flint expatriate living in an undisclosed location in Georgia who declared democrat ,voting in this great partys Georgia Super Tuesday.. Stated was “ I am voting in the democratic primary for Obama.” This was not a love vote for Obama but based on the paridigm; “ Hell will freeze over before I sit back and let that ____ in the White House.” When we look back this one Georgia voter will have tipped the scales for a democratic victory in 2008. Hillary becasue of this will be our president and Obama our vice President. Thank You Georgia [trb](satiree on the loose)

THE SUPER DELEGATES ARE BETTER THAN US RANK IN FILE?

These super-delegates don’t have superhuman powers, but unlike rank-and-file Democrats, they do automatically get to cast a vote at the convention to decide who the party’s nominee will be.[msnbc]

UNPLEDGES OR AGENTS OF AN ESTABLISHMENT?

Although dubbed “unpledged” in Democratic Party lingo, the super-delegates are free to come out before their state’s primary and pledge to support one of the presidential contenders. Msnbc]

The superior delegates will steal the Democratic party preidential nomination from Obama and give it to Clinton.[trb]

[Yesterday] -- Super Tuesday -- residents in 24 states and American Samoa [did] vote in the largest single day of balloting in the history of presidential primaries.[LAT]

THE CANDIDATES HAVE APPEALED PUBLICLY TO THE GRASS ROOTS WHILE THE BACK ROOM CROWD MANIPULATES THE OUT COME.

Why isn't there more uniformity?[LAT]

Because the two major political parties have no say over how states conduct elections. The parties can use incentives -- like giving or taking away delegates to this summer's national nominating conventions -- to get the states to comply with their wishes. But in the end, states are free to run elections as they choose.[LAT]

The Republican Party in reality is more grass roots when electing a president while the Democratic party is elite dominated.[trb]( Well I'll roast in hadies for this one!)

Obama is an engorging magnaw chamber about to blow into volcanic eruption at the National Democratic Convention. The reaction to Jeb Bush stealing of a past election by chad fraud will seem like kids play when this nation sees the reaction at the national democratic convention as the nation sees the democratic party super delegates steal the election Barack Obama won with the people![trb]

Do the states decide how delegates are awarded? [LAT]

No, that is decided by the political parties, which also determine who can vote in their primary or caucus. In some states, unaffiliated or "independent" voters can participate, but that varies by party. In California, independents can vote in today's Democratic primary but not the GOP's.[LAT]

Who are the "super delegates" and how do you become one?[LAT]

“One was not to get (ideologically) extreme candidates; the other was to avoid the Jimmy Carter phenomenon — where you had a guy who was not very experienced and not very well regarded by most of his fellow governors, but nevertheless managed to win the party’s nomination,” Mayer said.[msnbc]

Super delegates are people automatically granted a vote in the Democratic nominating process by dint of their office, or the political position they once held. Members of Congress and the nation's Democratic governors are super delegates. So are former Presidents Clinton and Carter and former Vice President Al Gore. There are 796 super delegates and they are free to support whomever they choose. The category was created to give the party establishment a say in the selection of the party's nominee.[LAT]

The category includes Democratic governors and members of Congress, former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, former vice president Al Gore, retired congressional leaders such as Dick Gephardt, and all Democratic National Committee members, some of whom are appointed by party chairman Howard Dean.[msnbc]

Why did the party adopt this partly undemocratic system? [msnbc]

Super-delegates were supposed to supply some Establishment stability to the nominating process.

I've felt all along that the primaries mean nothing. She will be the nominee no matter what. She feels that she has some sort of "Divine Right" to the Presidency.

Clinton Looks Past Obama and Faults Bush

Feb 6 12:34 AM US/Eastern
By BETH FOUHY
Associated Press Writer 7 Comments

NEW YORK (AP) - Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, clearly elated by a strong collection of Super Tuesday wins, looked past Democratic rival Barack Obama to take aim at President Bush and his Republican allies.
"You know tonight we are hearing the voices of people across America, people of all ages, of all colors, all faiths and all walks of life," she told supporters in a crowded Manhattan ballroom.

The New York senator is seeking to become the first woman president, while Obama would become the first black president.

Appearing onstage with her husband and daughter Chelsea, Clinton did not direct any criticism toward the Illinois senator who is now her only remaining Democratic rival. She focused her attention instead on Bush and his GOP allies

Yesterday I received this very personal report from the campaign of the next president of the United States.
David Plouffe, BarackObama.com" <info@barackobama.com>

Good ole Plouffe has been reporting to me personally for months. I am touched by the individual attention. Oh your right it always ends with a plea for money. Look at the statement they have raised more than 6 million this way. But I know they respect me for my mind not my wallet.[trb]

To:"Terry Bankert"
From:David Plouffe
"Terry –
I was writing a note to you about the state of the race after Super Tuesday when we got some startling news."[dp]

A CONVERSATION WITH DAVID PLOUFFE AN OBAMA FUND RAISER AND OTHERS
The Clinton campaign just announced that Hillary and Bill Clinton injected $5 million of their personal fortune into her campaign a few days ago.[dp]

Its their money. Every great AMERICAN family whose head has been president of the United States seem to get rich and have extra change for a change.[trb]

This is a dramatic move, and a clear acknowledgment that our campaign has the momentum. We saw undeniable evidence of that last night as the results came in.[dp]

So when Hillary wrote that check she was saying oh gosh Barack you got me now![trb]

Barack Obama won the most states and the most delegates on February 5th.[dp]

We have gotten to this point thanks to an unprecedented outpouring of support from ordinary Americans.[dp]

Ordinary! No it’s the " we are mad as heck and not going to take it anymore crowd". They are the same crowd that is rejecting the old tired leadership and wants a little political street fighting. Ordinary people just want to be safe , kids taken care or a roof over their head, food in the fridge and to have a good family life. Which crowd are you talking about old Ploufeey.[trb]

To date, more than 650,000 people like you have taken ownership of this campaign, giving whatever they can afford.[dp]

Like me? This really is a chaotic world.[trb]

We in Michigan bitterly regret not being able to vote in a real primary.[trb]

Clinton won both states' primaries. Illinois Sen. Barack Obama was not even on Michigan's ballot, since he had pulled his name to avoid angering Iowa and New Hampshire, which didn't like other states crowding to the front of the election calendar. Many of his Michigan supporters voted for Uncommitted, so there's a chance he'll get some of the state's delegates if any are seated.[MLIVE]

An overwhelming eight in 10 blacks supported Obama. Pg A 2 [fj020608]

The party hacks and elected officials are trying to assure us Michigans illegitimate delegation , not a real vote of the party rank and file, will get seated, we should not worry. Look, what they are really saying this was all a ploy to keep delegate seats from that upstart Obama, wink wink your wit us rt![trb]

For instance from the Flint Journal 02/06/08:" I think the states that Obama won will go to republicans in the general election so I don’t know how much that helped him" said Clinton supporter Ron Duncan chairman of the Genesee County Democratic Party. Page A 2 [fj020608]

Some body explain that statement to me please. Is this guy writing off millions of democratic general election votes in the majority republican states. Must be that new math stuff.[trb]

Duncan and Brewer seem to marching to the same drummer. Why would these party builders want to offend our base. There seems to be a local hot spot developing of how this election is being stolen from Obama. It will turn into a volcanic eruption and the Democratic National Convention.[trb]

"Super Tuesday was a success for Barack Obama and as of today there is no clear front runner, said Obama supporter Gerri Hall, chairwoman of the Genesee County Democratic Black Caucus." page A 2 [fj020608]

Gerri you got my vote for Genesee County Democratic party chairwoman.[trb]

But it's less likely that Obama would call for seating the delegates, since that may give Clinton enough to win the nomination at the convention if the race between the two goes on that long. His campaign manager called Clinton's call to seat the delegates a political ploy.[MLIVE]

There will be a rumble in the jungle at the National Democratic Convention. I am asking for press credential. How do you get them? I dare a local media outlet to sign me up, I’ll go...?[trb]

After Tuesday's contests, Clinton had 845 delegates, to 765 for Obama, with 2,025 delegates required ..[MLIVE]

The Clinton infusion of $5 million -- and there are reports it could end up being as much as $20 million -- will give them huge resources for the next set of primaries and caucuses.[dp]

It depends how you define million.[trb]

Thanks to you, we have raised more than $3 million since the polls closed on February 5th. But we have no choice -- we must match their $5 million right now.[dp]

I will tellya what. They next time tomorrow that I open a check book with my name on it that has 2 million in it I’m sending it to you. Plouffeey.[trb]

We're going to do it the right way, with small donations from people like you. It's never been more urgent that you make a donation of $25 right now:[dp]

You are presenting the image " we are just grass roots kinda people" Lets see 2 mill divided by $25 per person.[trb]

http://my.barackobama.com/page/m/ff73293e43a9c4f4/ZDSBIH/VEsE/

Just two weeks ago we were behind by double-digits in many of the states that voted yesterday, but Barack won 13 states to 8 states for Hillary Clinton, with one state (New Mexico) still counting votes.[dp]

Did you see my article on the super delegates that are going to steal the election from you! Go to Flint Talk dot com.[trb]

http://flinttalk.com/viewtopic.php?p=24124

Here is a list of the perpetrators:[trb]

Kildee and Dingell join five other Michigan superdelegates who already have committed to Clinton: Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Lt. Gov. John Cherry, Democratic National Committee member Joel Ferguson, U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow and U.S. Rep. Sander Levin.[MLIVE]

Well I guess my seeking any future political appointments is probably not a good idea now.[trb]

This is an enormous victory, and it's all thanks to you.[dp] (Terry?)

Why you are welcome Plouffey.[trb]

We won yesterday because thousands upon thousands of individual supporters canvassed their neighborhoods, talked to their neighbors and friends, and made phone calls to remind their fellow supporters to get out the vote.[dp]

So its you guys that are making all those phone calls during dinner, baby changing, and Big Fat Loser. Great going guys.[trb]

And we accomplished all of this with a campaign funded by ordinary people giving only what they can afford.[dp]

So in American heading for a Bush recession and Michigan in a GM depression they really are not giving you a dime.[trb]

Yesterday was proof that America is ready for change -- and that you are the force to make that change happen.[dp]

Thank You, but I cannot take full credit. There is that disaffected flint expateriot , exflintee, living somewhere in Georgia that turned the primary in your direction and is the pivotal vote that will bring a democratic victory in the fall. Go Georgia.[trb]

But there's still a long way to go before Barack becomes the Democratic nominee.[dp]

That my man is the understatement of the year. [trb]

In the next week alone, six more states will hold their primaries and caucuses.[dp]

We need to match this $5 million personal contribution from the Clintons immediately and put these resources to work in the states that will vote next.[dp]

Well I think it also should be the personal contribution from an individual to really make a point and take the pressure off us little people. Who should it be , you know the talk show, Color Purple, richest woman in the world. Gosh her name escapes m.. no I got it OPRAH. Get the money from her and leave us alone.[trb]

Please make a donation of $25 now:[dp]

Please is such a nice word. It means I have options.[trb]

Here are some details about yesterday's historic victory. According to official results and exit polls:
Barack won 2-to-1 in traditionally conservative states where Democrats are hungry for a nominee who can change the map and help Democrats up and down the ticket win in November [dp]

But you still have problems with those pesky super delegates who stole this election from you when the DNC rules changed.[trb]

Michigan is a maverick state to keep control the leaders torpedoed our primary keeping you off the ballot and Hillary on. They now claim this is a mandate of the people and the tired old guard status quo at all costs are annointing Hillary.[trb]

Michigan Democrats John Dingel and Dale Kildee are pledging their support for Hillary Rodham Clintons presidential bid.[MLIVE]

Now they are the very two guys who masterminded and are solely responsible for the Michigan primary debacle sicking their rabid lap dog Mark Brewer on the Michigan voter and stealing from us the right to participate in a meaning Democratic Michigan Primary.[trb]

Michigan has been stripped of its Democratic National Convention Delegates for violation of Party Rules by moving up its primary to Jan 15.[MLIVE]

Our winning coalition included Americans of every race, background, and gender -- including 64% of women in Georgia [dp] This includes that exflintee I was talking about..see.[trb]

We scored wins in every region of the country -- New England, the Mid-Atlantic, the South, the Midwest, the Rocky Mountain states, and the West [dp]

Americans had a clear choice to make yesterday, and they chose Barack Obama.[dp]

Now let's match this $5 million and take this campaign into the next stage.[dp]

When I find that ladies contact information I will send it too you.[trb]

“It’s Time for a Change” is the current campaign drum beat, the campaigns must have done their own polling.[trb]
While Bush seem to be preoccupied with the popularity of others he is oblivious to his own.[trb]

Perhaps more disconcerting for the Bush administration and Israel: Hamas's popularity, while still lower than that of the more secular Fatah party, is on the rise, reversing a nearly two-year slide as the Islamist group has begun to reassert itself.[TWSJ]

Who cares! Bush just not get it.[trb]

It's almost as if people can barely stand the thought of President Bush and Congress anymore. Bush reached his lowest approval rating in The Associated Press-Ipsos poll on Friday as only 30 percent said they like the job he is doing, including an all-time low in his support by Republicans. Congress' approval fell to just 22 percent, equaling its poorest grade in the survey. Both marks dropped by 4 percentage points since early January. [AF]

When you are from Flint, in a local depression with a vacating town victimized by a departing auto industry you kn ow it was the economy all along. Why didn’t our elected officials protect us?[trb]

The dour public mood seems to chiefly reflect distress over the doddering economy, which has seen job cuts, financial market slides and real estate losses stoke recession fears. Bush's approval for handling the economy dove to 29 percent, a slide of 4 percentage points in a month and matching his low on that issue, with noticeable slumps among middle-income people, Southerners and city residents.[AF]

In our high school infatuation with the neo conservative religious with FOX net work political diatribes we closed our eyes to reality. Wake up USA it time to get the real smell of poverty, yours! Our national dissatisfaction with all republicans caused by Bush is sending a tidal wave of political contributions to our Democratic political insurgency that as in Chad today will be sweeping through the streets of DC and seizing the capital this fall.[trb]

The Democratic presidential campaigns of Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton said Thursday that their primary and caucus victories this week had translated into big numbers: $7.2 million in donations for him and $6.4 million for her.[LAT]

"He's spent billions of dollars on the war, and the economy here is suffering," said Ron Brathwaite, 41, a Democrat from Brooklyn, N.Y., who was interviewed in the poll. "If you're leading this country, you should start fixing within this country."[AF]

9-11, and two wars kept the country distracted while Bush gave our wealth to his families domestic and foreign friends.[trb]

Bush and Congress have been overshadowed in recent months by a presidential campaign in which both parties' candidates have emphasized how they would change Washington — an implicit criticism of the president and the Democratic-led Congress. Even the leading Republican contenders have spent little time defending Bush, though they haven't attacked him frequently because he remains popular within the GOP.[AF]

If Bush is still popular in the GOP then the GOP should go. [trb]

Yet Bush's acceptance by his own party is at bottom in the AP-Ipsos poll. Just 61 percent of Republicans gave Bush positive reviews; his previous low was 65 percent last month. Only 28 percent of them expressed strong approval.[AF]

Conservatives are struggling to find an opinion in this presidential race.[trb]

Although Republican Presidential hopefuls like Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee are holding on for their dear lives, one can argue John McCain has already won the Conservatives popularity contest. He will most likely run against either Hillary Clinton or Barak Obama, and there is a plausible chance he can win. In response to the possibility of McCain becoming the next President of the United States, I thought to myself, "It can't be that bad...no one is worse than President Bush."[AOL]

About one in 10 Democrats and three in 10 independents gave Bush positive marks.[AF]

"I believe we have to protect the country at all costs," said Jack Vogt, 61, a retiree from Lakeland, Fla., and a strong Bush supporter. He said he did not fault the president or Congress for the economy's problems, saying, "I don't feel they can influence it one way or the other."[AF]

A rudderless ship will flounder in heavy water as will a leaderless county. How better to have defended our country than from destruction of our economy from subsidized foreign labor.[trb]

Bush's previous overall low in the AP-Ipsos poll came in November when his approval rating was 31 percent. His current level is essentially even with that.[AF]

Congress also hit 22 percent in October. It usually has lower ratings than the president because it is an institution people love to criticize. Many have negative views of Congress while still supporting their own House and Senate members.[AF]

Even so, its ratings are approaching its historic low in the Gallup Poll of 18 percent reached in early 1992 during a furor over lawmakers who bounced House bank checks. Only about one in five Democrats, Republicans and independents approve of Congress' work, with less than one in 20 from each group approving strongly.[AF]

In 2008 we will change the party in the white house and the party of those congressional republican up for election.[trb]

"...
Bush also hit a new low in this month's poll for his work on domestic issues like health care, energy and the environment, getting approval from 27 percent, a 7-point tumble since January. Thirty-three percent approved of his handling of the war in Iraq, virtually unchanged.[AF]

Underlining the public gloom, after a brief holiday uptick, the mood of the country has returned to its level in November, with just 25 percent saying the country is headed in the right direction.[AF]

Bush beats Nixon!![trb]

President Truman had the lowest rating ever in the Gallup Poll with 23 percent approval in 1952 during the Korean War; President Nixon reached 24 percent during the summer of 1974 before he resigned during the Watergate scandal.[AF]

So where do we go now? The Republicans are surging to McCain. But is he the answer?[trb]

McCain is a carbon copy of George Bush ...except he's older, and with a much more scandalous wife. In fact, his wife openly expressed one of her wrong-doings when she admitted to stealing prescription drugs from a charity she created herself. [AOL]

Is Hillary Clinton the answer? [trb]

" I managed to stumble upon a clip of Hillary Clinton in one of last year’s Democratic debates. The question posed was, “Are you a liberal?” As Hillary furtively and spinelessly answered the simple question—in effect saying no—I began to think about the presidential election and remember her for the person she actually was. Throughout her experienced political career...Hillary Clinton has failed as a liberal. As a student at Wellesley, she actively campaigned for Republican Barry Goldwater, a man who more than once spoke of pre-emptively nuking the USSR and who also opposed civil rights. On the major issue of our time, the Iraq War, she voted for the resolution authorizing war, arguing that Saddam Hussein must “disarm or be disarmed”. Subsequently, when public support of the war started diminishing, Clinton’s perspective changed accordingly—a change politicized further by her refusal to honestly accept her vote as a mistake. In its place, she shirked blame, arguing that President Bush implemented Operation Iraqi Freedom poorly. She has also criticized the May 2007 troop surge, offensively proclaiming that if Iraqis are “not going to stand up and take responsibility, we should not lose another American life.” [THC]

Just where do we go now? Barack Obama seem to be the only legitimate voice for change. Its too bad that in Michigan we did not have a chance a votes to support him. Its too bad that the Michigan super delegates have hijacked the Michigan Democratic National Convention vote to deliver to Bill’s wife.[trb]

GUN CONTROL IN THE UNITED STATES- ITS TIME!
1st in a series by
Terry Bankert
http://attorneybankert.com/

How many people have to die before we seriously debate gun politics?
____________

Gun politics is a set of legal issues surrounding the ownership, use, and regulation of firearms as well as safety issues related to firearms both through their direct use and through legal and criminal use.[1] The answer to these questions and the nature of the politics varies and depends on the national and local political jurisdiction.

The nature of gun politics varies widely between and among different jurisdictions. In the United States, opinion is very strongly divided, between those who oppose restrictions on gun ownership[2], and those who favor greater restrictions.[3] This leads to intensive political debate about the benefit or detriment of firearm regulation.[4] In other nations, the trend is towards stricter gun regulation than in the United States.

Its been debated and the antis have no case. Thousands more guns are on the street in the hands of law abiding citizens thanks to shall issue laws in all but the most liberal meccas. Crime is down in all those states. All the handwringing by you libs about how bad concealed carry laws would be was proven to be more liberal bullcrap smoke and mirrors. In case you have not noticed two of the most antigun presidential candidates in history dont have the balls (yup hillary too) to even bring it up and are attempting to hide from their past antigun support. But ill guarantee you their antigun record will come back to haunt them. Ask Algore or kerry how succesful they were in attempting to cover up all their antigun votes and statements. Guns in the hands of honest folks save lives and the only effective form of guncontrol is being able to hit your target. By the way wouldnt I be surprised if you have a carry permit yourself. Smile
